Robert
on 'Faith'... "A lot of people are like us. Everybody I know has gone through the emotional trauma of Seventeen Seconds, which is learning you can't trust people as implicitly as you'd thought when you were younger. Faith is about having gone through that and trying to discover what you can have faith in, the loss of innocence and growing older, as in 'Primary,' and trying to sort out what your life's about." (Trouser Press 1981). "I have my own criticisms of the album. The production is really shit! More seriously we didn't allow ourselves enough time to develop the songs in the studio; then again if we'd taken longer that would've been self-indulgent. The last album took under 20 days, this one a bit more but even that was too much; we have self-imposed limits on how much time and money we should spend. It took so long because we kept getting thrown out of studios in favour of 'more important' people, and once we lost the mood we never quite got back the atmosphere we wanted. Also some of it could have been a little more cohesive." (Trouser Press 1981). "'Faith' was going to be a very positive record. It turned into a very morbid record... there were just personal reasons which affected everyone at the time. We then had to live with it for a year, in that we toured with it - and it was the one record that we shouldn't have done that with, because for one year we lived this doomy, semi-religious record. We sort of wore it everywhere we went; it was like sack-cloth and ashes... it wasn't a very enjoyable year, really." (Inbetweenies, New Musical Express 14/9/1985, David Quantick) "This is one of my favourite 3 cure albums. It was written at a time of ever deepening depression, and was intended to explore the whole notion of "faith": but it ended up as a testament to near complete disbelief, and led me on and down - enter pornography"". (Cure News 8 - September 1989). On stage Robert turned away from his audiences "I had to! It was perceived as arrogance, but it was more to do with shyness. I couldn't face what we were doing and face an audience at the same time. Also, four of the bands family members died within a two month stretch of time, and we were deeply affected by these deaths. At the same moment in 'The Funeral Party', everyone on stage went, gulp! Anyway, I was probably obsessed with the idea of faith because I thought that if I found something to believe in, it would sort out all my other problems, and I didn't". (Cure News 19 - May 1998) "I made a credo in those days saying "Less is more". The idea behind Faith, was that nothing was to happen throughout the entire album. I felt I was compromising, when I put in the drums. It's not my favorite album, but when I look back, I see an honest attempt from someone too young, who had not experienced enough to do what he wanted." (Gaffa (Danish music magazine) Feb.2000) "Along with Seventeen Seconds and Disintegration it's one of the best albums we've done. When I wrote Primary, the first single, I didn't think it could be played on radio." (Rock Star Feb. 2000) |
